Kyiv, Ukraine – Russia unleashed one of the most sustained barrages of the war on Sunday, launching hundreds of drones and missiles at Kyiv and other regions in Ukraine, killing at least four people and wounding dozens more.
Ukraine’s military said Russian forces launched 595 drones and 48 missiles overnight, with air defenses intercepting 568 drones and 43 missiles. The primary target was the capital, where explosions reverberated for hours, shattering windows, destroying homes, and igniting fires.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the onslaught lasted more than 12 hours and struck a cardiology clinic, factories, and residential areas. He called for tougher international sanctions to sever Russia’s energy revenues. “The time for decisive action is long overdue,” Zelenskiy said, urging the United States, Europe, the G7, and the G20 to respond.
Poland briefly closed its southeastern airspace and scrambled jets in response to the attacks before the danger passed, underscoring the regional spillover risks.
In Kyiv suburbs, Reuters reporters saw rows of newly built homes destroyed and cars flattened by debris. Many residents sought shelter in metro stations as explosions lit up the night sky. Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, said one of the fatalities may have been a 12-year-old girl, though the death was not officially confirmed.
The southern city of Zaporizhzhia was also hit hard, with at least 16 people injured and multiple buildings ablaze. Nationwide, emergency services reported 67 people wounded.
The Russia Ukraine Attack highlights both the scale of Moscow’s aerial campaign and the strain on Ukraine’s defenses as the war grinds into its third year. For Kyiv, it also intensifies diplomatic pressure on Western allies—particularly Washington, where Ukraine has so far struggled to persuade President Donald Trump’s administration to impose harsher measures on Moscow.
